I bought myself a shiny new little camera. It’s a Panasonic Lumix FX-10. There’s not much to say about it, except for my amazement at how cheap technology has become. That means, there will be a lot more photos in this blog once again.

The camera is 6 megapixels with decent image stabilization in the subcompact class. It uses SD cards, which just fits nicely with the eeePC heading the same way.

The following sentence contains lots of keywords to help people googling for error messages, please ignore if you did not come here by these means: The Panasonic Lumix DMC FX-10 gets easily detected as a USB external drive by ubuntu. Not by gphoto2 though, which aborts with an “unspecified error”. Disable automatic camera detection in System - Preferences - Removable Drives and Media.

Since I couldn’t find a library that implements the Schulze Method for Condorcet Voting in Java, I wrote one. Click here for the source code. It’s not extensively tested, but should work. Comments are welcome.

Seit der letzten Preiserhöhung von Greenwheels vergleiche ich regelmäßig die Carsharing-Angebote, die in Berlin verfügbar sind. Als da wären: Greenwheels, Stadtmobil, DB Carsharing, Sixti Car Club und Cambio.

Eigene Erfahrung habe ich gesammelt als Kunde bei Greenwheels,  DB Carsharing und bei Sixti. Einen Vergleich der übrigen Argumente für und gegen die einzelnen Anbieter findet ihr hier.

Das ganze ist natürlich nur ein Denkanstoß - in der Praxis gibt es noch viele andere Punkte, die berücksichtigt werden wollen: Wieviele Stationen gibt es, gibt es eine Station in meiner Umgebung? Zahle ich eine Anmeldungsgebühr, oder kann ich das “einfach mal ausprobieren”? Fahre ich wirklich jeden Monat? Und wie ist eigentlich der Service? Auch die Sehr-wenig-Fahrer oder Langzeitmieter dürften sich in der Untersuchung nicht wiederfinden. Unabhängig von diesen Faktoren also hat mich interessiert, welcher Anbieter bei welcher Nutzung tatsächlich am preiswertesten ist.

Vorgehensweise:

Einen Preisvergleich habe ich anhand der aktuellen Tarife vom Juli 2008 laut Webseiten in den zwei halbwegs vergleichbaren Klassen “Kleinwagen” (etwa Opel Corsa) und “Kombi” (etwa Opel Astra Kombi) gemacht. Eine dritte Kategorie “Mini” vergleicht die jeweils kleinste verfügbare Klasse, unterscheidet sich vom “Kleinwagen” also nur bei Stadtmobil. Alle Angaben habe ich mir nach bestem Wissen und Gewissen von den Webseiten zusammengesucht, und sind daher völlig ohne jegliche Gewähr. Berücksichtigt wurden

• bei Greenwheels die Tarife 5, 15 und 25,
• bei DB, Stadtmobil und Sixti der Einheitstarif für Privatkunden
• bei Cambio die Tarife Start, Aktiv, Comfort, Profi und Business.
• Der neue Startertarif von Stadtmobil ist noch -nicht- berücksichtigt.

Die Berechnungen gibt es jeweils für die Tagestarife (meistens 8-20 Uhr) und die Abendtarife (20-8 Uhr). Einen besonders teuren Wochenendtarif gibt es bei Greenwheels, der wird daher nochmal extra ausgeführt.

Bei der Berechnung geholfen haben mir ein paar Zeilen Python und 10 Zeilen Gnuplot, die ich auf Anfrage gerne herzeige.

Ergebnis:

Die folgenden Grafiken zeigen also

• für eine gegebene Anzahl an Fahrten pro Monat
• pro durchschnittlicher Fahrtstrecke und
• pro durchschnittlicher Mietdauer

den jeweils preiswertesten Anbieter. Das ganze jeweils für 1,3,5,10 und 29 Fahrten im Monat - oder als Animation. Da muß man dann bei “seinem” Profil einmal den Pausenknopf betätigen.

Having just returned from the twenty-fourth chaos communication congress, I am now preparing to make a relaxed transition to the next release of time 2.0. We’ve collected quite a bunch of measurements in the freifunk network set up at the congress, and I will parse through these during the next days.

The congress itself was great, as usual, and I sincerely suggest that you parse through the schedule and recordings of the talks if you haven’t done so already.

I am as always impressed by the sheer number of intelligent, creative people gathering in such a small place and the things that just emerge.

Things happen while blogs starve.

My plans to build a graphic tablet display got spoiled by the sudden appearance of Penabled tablet PCs on my horizon of knowledge. Especially the Tecra M7 convertibles which we will use for demonstration purposes at my company.

Recently, I spend a lot of time drawing maps for the OpenStreetMap project, which I fully support. Because information should be free.

I am planning to visit the Chaos Communication Camp in Summer. Hopefully, I will be able to build an Open Source Flying Drone at the workshop of the same name. Who knows, maybe one could use this for mapping even.

And finally, I have just booked a business trip. Serious business, honestly. The conference venue is at a place which you can easily find when you enter “Surfers Paradise” at Google Maps. (Try and envy!)
