quiver update

While this modified Risky SurfSkate won’t have the surfy flex of my other long distance board, the Roe Mermaid LDP, it’s lightness definitely makes for a fun ride. And this time, it’s all about the looks. I fear that I will have to disfigure it by applying some transparent grip tape though. Right now, it’s only ridable while barefooted.

No news is lots of news

Things happen while blogs starve.

My plans to build a graphic tablet display got spoiled by the sudden appearance of Penabled tablet PCs on my horizon of knowledge. Especially the Tecra M7 convertibles which we will use for demonstration purposes at my company.

Recently, I spend a lot of time drawing maps for the OpenStreetMap project, which I fully support. Because information should be free.

I am planning to visit the Chaos Communication Camp in Summer. Hopefully, I will be able to build an Open Source Flying Drone at the workshop of the same name. Who knows, maybe one could use this for mapping even.

And finally, I have just booked a business trip. Serious business, honestly. The conference venue is at a place which you can easily find when you enter “Surfers Paradise” at Google Maps. (Try and envy!)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Sixties music is playing in my head.

la guerrilla

guerilla0021
The weekend was a rainy one again, which did not keep us from skating in flaeming on saturday. On sunday, we had the end-of-season longboardz.de guerilla race 2006 with lots of international guests from remote places like Hannover and Stuttgart. And my bearings decided to totally rust out during that night.

berlin city tours

I just noticed that I completely forgot to mention this great skating and sightseeing opportunity: Approximately every two weeks there’s a big skater manifestation, the Berlinparade (not to be confused with the Love Parade) taking place in the center of Berlin. A different track is skated every time and police escorts will close the roads for traffic. The track length is usually around 20-35km, with an average speed of maybe 12-18km/h. Last friday was the last parade in the evening, but there will be a few remaining ones this year on sundays at 3 p.m.

Or, as the organizers would say:

“Don’t stau, skate now.”

maybe the best of which was crusing through the city with a bunch of 30 likeminded longboarders.

skating in flaeming

Did you know… that close to Berlin there’s the largest complex of inline skate trails in Europe? Of course, skating mustn’t necessarily take place with the wheels in line - so during the last few weeks, I’ve been there skating a few circle tracks - which are available in lengths between 11 and 97km. The asphalt is butter smooth, three meters wide, and the scenery is a really nice change from the daily cityscape.

hexenrennen

this weekend we had the hexenrennen in thale/harz, germany - part of the kill hill series of races. Rain screwed up most of the race and planning, but we had lots of fun nonetheless.

bbbike is a great tool..

..for pedal and asphalt kickers alike: Berlin by Bike (bbbike). Make sure to have a look at the offline version. I’ve set my search parameters in a way that strongly prefers small side streets with Q0 (best) road quality. During my yesterday’s trip to the en.Wikipedia meetup, I flew almost exclusively through little alleys and other not-for-traffic places. I missed the route planning on the way back already.

Thats 12.8km after all plus my morning commute. Just wait until I learn to push with my other foot, too. ;)
