Puerto Arista / Oaxaca

We’ve just spent a few nice days in the sleepy village of Puerto Arista at José’s Cabañas.The Pacific coast is so much more impressive than all the white beaches in the Carribean. Real waves! We also went canoeing and birdwatching in the mangroves and watched the release of turtles from a turtle sanctuary. Reporting in from Oaxaca, Oaxaca now.. just arrived with the night bus.

Hi, guys! My hubby and I watched you on the tightrope at Jose’s. We are the couple with the wrecked Honda and extended stay in Mexico while the car was being repaired. We had a great relaxed time in Puerto Arista, saw a sea turtle come to the beach and lay her eggs one afternoon while we were having a beer under a palapa. We traveled down the coast and took several side trips out to the coast of Chiapas. We met a great group of school children who surrounded us with their questions, smiles and antics. They wanted to know how to say their words in English, so we had a little lesson with them. We saw the result of a horrible landslide that buried a village in 1998, the trees that grow in the mountains now grow nearly to the ocean. There were 150 lives lost when it happened in the middle of the night. We hiked and climbed to a beautiful cascade in the country towards the mountains from Puerto Arista. We met a young man with a boy and donkey, returning from hauling milk from the top of the cascade where his pasture is located. He had spent some years working construction in the states, but I suspect between homesick and lack of work due to the falling economy, he is home again and said he is much happier. We spent almost 5 weeks in Puerto Arista this fall and met people we hope to revisit there soon. This is not a place for swingers and partiers, it is laid back and a place to regroup and slow down the pace. We loved it!
